Alright, for those who are coming with me this Sunday to the Faire I recommend purchasing your tickets online. The tickets are something like $25 at the gate and $21 online so that's a few saved dollars. Also the park requires that you pay an entrance fee of $8 for every vehicle so maybe we can coordinate rides. Other than that I will see you all there. I plan to get there before the early show so if we want to meet up I suggest we meet outside the gate. See you there!

Adventures in Cooking

I've attempted to make a recipe that I've mostly deemed one of those that only mother can make, Navy Beans and Ham. It's important that I try new things so here goes. Lunch will be my taste test.

Edit: Tried it. Not quite what momma used to make. Maybe less onions, maybe soak the beans over night. I dunno but this will require more practice.

D&D 4th Edition?

To my geeky friends, I need your help. I have a finite amount of money to spend on some rulebooks but I'm still not too sure what I want to get since I only have enough for one set of books. 3.5 or 4? I'm looking to get some new future gamers into D&D. Other than myself there's maybe one other with any experience with the game. I've been reading the 4th edition rules and I've played 3.5. I've also been reading reviews online and I haven't found anything to swade me one way or another. What I need is a rules set that is easy for new players to understand and that an old "greybeard" DM like me can still get my role playing on. What do you guys think?

Yup! For those of you who don't know yet, I broke the bone just below the pinky on my left hand. I'm in a splint right now and learning to type LJ posts with one hand. Good times. Not too much pain and I've learned I have a high pain tolerance. I will learn more when I call the doctor on Monday.

For those of you who read my LJ and do not read zhiversten 's here is the rest of the story. I saw to it that she was delivered home safely from the hospital. She is doing very well and is extremely happy to be back in her appartment with all her friends. I stayed until her Father came to take care of her then took my leave. I am happy that she is healthier and safe at home. The Watch may now rest.

Things are going much better now. We moved her out of critical care and into the regular hospital. They had put 3 units of blood in her and she is looking a lot better having regained all of her color. She also seems to be maintaining a normal hemoglobin level. She is still on the clear liquid diet and luckily they are allowing her to have two bowls of broth since she seems to want savory flavor rather than the sweet flavor of the jello and juice. Most of all she "Just wants a damn biscut!" with butter and honey. She says if she found a lamp and a genie popped out she would ask for a healthy colon and a biscut. The situation now is that she just has a long slow recovery ahead of her. The Doctor said her's was the worst colon he's ever seen in his 11 years of practice. We do not know when she will be released.

I have good news and bad news and more "ok" news. Yesterday Kirsten was doing her best yet. She has been eating things like before and had gone for three short walks meaning that she was at her most energetic since this problem first began.

Then things took a downturn. She was admitted to intensive care when she began bleeding heavily. It seems that one of her ulcers had found a vein.

The good news is that she has stabilized and stopped bleeding in the middle of the night last night. She is still in intensive care and being watched constantly. Therefore she is back to her normal healing schedual. I will not be able to write too many more updates for awhile since I will be traveling out to visit her this evening. Keep the good thoughts coming. I tell her about everyone who replies to these posts and it ususally puts a big smile on her face.

Zhiversten's Health

I went to visit her last night because she was in low spirits. She is having a tough time to be sure and she is frustrated with how slow her body is recovering and how tired her once strong body has become. They are putting her on a medicine this morning that should boost her immune system and allow her body to mend the damage.

I just got news that she is back to eating! It's clear broth and juice but she is eating! HOORAY!!!

The Health of Zhiversten

For those that know Kirsten I have a report on her current health and well being. Her mother and I put her in the hospital on Saturday. She was very dehydrated and was happy to get a drink in her arm. Soon after her cheeks filled out and she was feeling much better. We watched over her all of Sunday and she was starting to be cheerful, smiling and telling jokes. She is not quite up to eating foods just yet but I am confident that it is not far off. She has an examination tomorrow morning to see what is going on and after that we should know how long she will need to stay in the hospital. Yes, I am writing this in LA but I left her in the capable hands of her mother and the nurses at the hospital. You may call her if you wish. She has her cell phone with her but I would not recommend calling her until Monday afternoon. Also she is very tired and of course she has to get up every hour or so, so she could use the rest. Just know that she is doing better.

Video Game front:

I took a look at my actual computer specs and exactly where I fall short. Good news is that I make the requirement for RAM. I think what was stuck in my head was that I had half gig. of RAM, I just had two of them making one full gig.
Where I fall utterly short is on my graphics card. Which I might add was not purchased by me but handed down from my roommie. He has a better hand me down graphics card but the real problem is this: We tried to put in a better card into my mother board and found that it didn't work. See, I need a new mother board that can handle the higher end graphics cards. So, yah, I'm right where I started only now with proof. At least Wrath of the Lich King comes out soon and I know WoW works on my computer.

Thanks to aliskye for this one. Written by a young lady in Canada based off of a dream she had so most of the characters are based on real life friends of hers. I have to say that this one is well crafted and well illustrated. Rated R by the way for wicked zombie action! I enjoyed this one but it was all too short. Incredible lore written into the different kind of zombies, the spread of the disease and the type of society that grows around just surviving a zombie holocost. Good stuff!

Thanks to Marion. This one took me awhile to get into. An awful lot of reading before the cool clanks and stuff start to come out and our heroine starts to come into her own. The story is a little much sometimes since it really comepletely revolves around the main character. The story is seemingly contrived for the absurd style comedy effect but not too bad. One thing I have to say is I like the portrayal of men in the story. Too often when a story is written about romance (female version of romance as opposed to male version, someday I'll write an essay on this) the men are portrayed very poorly. Most often when seeing these so called "men" it makes me want to reach into my computer and slap the snot out of them. They just don't seem human. For the most part, in this comic the men are real. They're human. Well, they're a little quirky but so is the rest of the comic. This one is not may favorite but it was entertaining. Seemed like it might make a fun tabletop RPG.

They came out with Red Alert 3 today, yay! I love RTSs! I get the copy and take it to the counter and the nice lady says, "That'll be $10 'cause you work here!" Yay! Then my boss says, "I needs RAM." I think, "I haven't upgraded my computer in a while I wonder what the system requirements are for this game..." I look on the box to find my computer cannot run the game. /cry Then I look at my bank account, it says, "You haz no munnys for computer." /Big cry

After a truely excellent weekend I must now return to the mundanity of my job. Worse yet they have me doing the worst of all mundane jobs... the interrupt checklist. This is where I take said Cell Phone Game and attempt to call, text, close the clamshell, and all known ways of screwing with the game that I can possibly do. I must do this for every screen in the game. Boooriiiiing!!!

I usually can break up the monotony by looking at different web comics. The ones that work best are the epic story ones but I've read through my favorite one many times and I do not want to spoil myself of it. Anyway, here is a list of my favorite web comics:

1. Goblins: Life Through Thier Eyes.
This one is my all time favorite! The story is such an intense tale of what it is like to be a goblin in a D&D realm where all people want to do is kill you for XP. Sounds silly, and they do make D&D references throughout but it's more a comment on racism and what makes someone noble and what makes them a villian. Are you a good guy just because you're human? Starts goofy with childish humor and black and white panels, then goes to color and dives deep into story.

2. Order of the Stick
A stick figure comic based off of D&D that for the most part has some actually laugh out loud jokes as well as compelling story. For the most part people are drawn to the comic by the comedy and complain when there is a lot of story.

3. Erfworld
From the same person as OOTS it is a story of a regular guy who plays miniatures and gets sucked into a world where the miniatures battles are all real. Interesting story though not so hot on the comedy but still worth checking out.

5. Ctrl+Alt+Del
Video game web comic about two guys living together and playing video games. Not a lot on the story but a lot of fun sometimes as the author will reference different popular video games.

So, there is my top 5 webisode comics. For the most part people seem to feel that if it's a comic on the web it should be outrageously funny but I seem to have fallen in love with the deep meaningful stories.

Many times have I gone to SCA events and people seem to want to get dressed up and get their middle eastern groove on. I've always thought it was fun and I wanted to join in on the party. Most of these middle eastern parties seem to have the men drumming (cause it's manly to beat on things) while the women dance (usually they wear these skimpy belly dance outfits, bonus!) This is not true for all people of course. There are many drummers who like drumming because they feel it is a source of musical expression. Also there are several women who drum. There is even a great deal of dancers who wear historicaly accurate clothing that do not show hardly any skin and who actually know how to dance rather than just jiggle.

Now I looked at all this and said, "Me too! Me too! I wanna play!" People said, "You're a guy, you should drum!" I looked at this instument and saw that it seemed limited since it could really only make one type of sound. Now, there are a great deal of things that can be done with a drum but if you ask me it's not quite the same variety as a string instrument. Mostly, drumming just isn't my thing. I said, "I want to dance!" The celtestany (people dressed in celtic/middle eastern/pirate garb) guys all say, "You can't dance. Only women dance. Men drum." All the women look at me funny as though to say, "Why would you dance? You're not a woman." Not wanting to be swayed by narrowminded people I began some research. What I learned through asking different experts was that the modern SCA has it all wrong. The women would drum and the men would dance! Now, this has some exceptions of course. Women would dance but only for each other. Men could drum and often did, but most importantly for me was... Men can dance!

So, I've been working on finding info on this subject. Mostly I've been looking for teachers to teach me how to do the dancing and I'm finding out that there are not many. In fact, there are none that I know of. It may very well be setting off to be one of the only men who know how to do male middle eastern dancing in the SCA. Wow! Anyway, I went to my friends house to visit my two brothers and my friends Bruce and Ellen. Ellen showed me a video on some Iranian guys dancing as well as a few pictures from a few books. It seems like male middle eastern dancing was a little more like the Wild Rumpus from Where the Wild Things Are. So, we decided to do some wild rumpusing with me and my little brother Nate with Bruce drumming. It was fun and I seem to have a talent for being able to spin and catch myself so perhaps I will be more dervish like with my dancing. In conlusion, I feel I have taken my first step into a larger world that could be a lot of fun and allow me to get my middle eastern groove on!

EDIT: I think my next step is to talk to this Kingdom's newest Laurel since she quite an expert on all things middle eastern. She might be able to help me get in touch with some good research material or perhaps a dance studio I can learn from.

The war was a lot of fun. My fencing was top notch and I have to be proud of myself on this one. Between the parties at night, building the coracle during the day this was an event to remember. I truely hope that all of you reading this have something in your lives as truely fun as this.

Just this last Satuday my sister was married! Congrats to her and my new brother. The event was a lot of fun and we accomplished it with very few problems. It was good to see the family get together for a joyful occation.

So many people love this holiday. Many will say that it is their favorite and they wait all year 'round for it. My opinion... it is my least favorite of all holidays. To me it is more stressful than any other holiday. Most of the time I have very little time or money to work on a costume only to wear it once and never use it again due to Holloween culture. Most of the time I am invited to parties where I must show up in costume or "be dressed" where I am made to wear a more humiliating costume than if I would have come up with something on my own. Even my vane attempts at getting a T-shirt that says "costume" on it leave me feeling left out. Please Holloween, pass me by and leave me the All Saints Day instead.

An omage to jaligard

One of the things that makes me happy is when my teacher, Gary Chelak asks me for my honest opinion. Whenever he sends me an Email I always answer it immediately upon recieving it. He always thanks me for being quick and thoughtful with my resonse. It always seems to brighten my day to do so and recieve the thanks.

Tattershall is starting up a new season on Thursday Sept. 11th and all are invited to attend, afterall first one is free. ;-) We will be starting things off right with German Dusack class taught by Jeff Jacobson. This is a beginer level class so do not worry about your relative skill level. The German Dusack was a practice weapon used by the Germans to hone their sword skills. It features a blade commonly made of wood or leather that is a little over half the length of your arm with a hole cut out for the handle. Come join us as we learn to master this ancient fighting art that seems to teach a person to use their body more than fancy bladework to aviod your opponent's cuts and deliver that well placed blow!

The Salle (school) will be open 6-6:50 for free sparing/application. After that will begin the formal Dusack class. A second slot will be at 8:20-9:30 where existing "Shall" people will be working on application of the previous (year) study. Newer people are welcome to stay and observe, study, practice, review coursework, and even free-fence! The Salle is located at:
