Adventures in Cooking
I've attempted to make a recipe that I've mostly deemed one of those that only mother can make, Navy Beans and Ham.  It's important that I try new things so here goes.  Lunch will be my taste test.

Edit:  Tried it.  Not quite what momma used to make.  Maybe less onions, maybe soak the beans over night.  I dunno but this will require more practice.

Why in the world would that worry you?

Teehee! I think it was mostly the "Navy Beans." What's a Navy Bean?

My Mama makes several dishes like that, and my attempts never turned out the same until- and here is The Big Tip- I used Mama's recipes! Maybe your mom has a recipe for that soup you could try, and it would turn out more like what you had in mind. But kudos to you for experimenting!

I was using the recipe. It just has no exact measurements. I'll either need to be there when she cooks it or figure it out.

I *always* enjoy the onions better if tossed around in a skillet first. Every good recipe seems to start with "Skillet, onions, garlic."

Beans *always* should soak overnight, if you're starting from dried beans.

My Mom used to make Navy Beans & ham too, (a loooong time ago...) Wow, I hadn't thought of that recipe in forever!
You know, I've heard of moms who purposefully *don't* pass along the entire recipe in order to ensure that theirs is the best, or to give the kids a reason to visit, or somesuch. Hmmmmm... ;)
